Offshore wind development in the US has suffered from fits and starts over the past decade. During this time, Europe has installed 15,780 MW of offshore generating capacity, coming from 4,149 grid-connected turbines in 11 countries. Cumulatively, this represents Euro74.1 Billion (approx. US$91.8 BN) of investment in the European offshore wind industry. But recent initiatives in several Northeastern states – often articulated first and most unequivocally by the individual governors themselves, give cause for optimism that this time, US offshore wind has finally arrived as a significant development & resource opportunity for the commercial sector, while being cost-effective and environmentally responsible for rate-payers and local communities and related constituencies.
