Affordable and Clean Energy for All

Rajiv Shah
President of the Rockefeller Foundation

In conversation with Johannes Urpelainen
Director and Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Professor, SAIS Energy, Resources and Environment Program
and Founding Director, Initiative for Sustainable Energy Policy (ISEP)

Appointed in 2017, Dr. Rajiv is the thirteenth President of the Rockefeller Foundation and has over twenty years of experience in business, government, and philanthropy. He is a former American government official, physician and health economist who served as the 16th Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) from 2010–2015. Appointed as USAID Administrator by President Obama in 2009, and unanimously confirmed by the Senate, Dr. Shah was charged with reshaping the $20 billion agency’s operations to provide greater assistance to pressing development challenges around the globe. As Administrator, Dr. Shah led the Obama Administration’s efforts to secure billions of dollars of private investments for African power development to bring more than 26,000 MW of power online. By elevating the importance of innovation, promoting public-private partnerships, rethinking internal practices, and shifting how dollars were spent to deliver stronger results, Dr. Shah secured bipartisan support that enabled USAID to dramatically accelerate its work to end extreme poverty. Following his resignation from USAID in 2015, he founded Latitude Capital, a global emerging markets power and infrastructure private equity firm; and was also appointed a Distinguished Fellow in Residence at Georgetown University.
