The Initiative for Sustainable Energy Policy (ISEP) welcomes applications for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral research visits at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

ISEP visiting scholars will work with ISEP on policy-relevant projects related to energy and environment in emerging economies. All ISEP visiting scholars will be advised and mentored by Professor Johannes Urpelainen, ISEP’s Founding Director. ISEP research is interdisciplinary in nature and we welcome applications from a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to data science, economics, political science, and public policy.

“One of ISEP’s unique strengths is our global network,” says Professor Urpelainen. “The ISEP visiting scholar program provides talented early career scholars with an incredibly opportunity to study energy and environmental policy in Washington, DC. My work with ISEP visiting scholars has been rewarding, and many of our best long-term collaborations have started this way.”

A research stay can last anywhere between 2-12 months. While visiting scholars must fund their own expenses during the visit, Johns Hopkins SAIS will offer office space, library access, and administrative support. For international candidates, visa sponsorship is available, subject to United States immigration law.

“I had a wonderful time as an ISEP pre-doctoral fellow,” says Nada Maamoun from the University of Hamburg, who conducted research on the political economy of coal-fired power generation with ISEP in Washington, DC in the fall of 2018. “During my stay, I learned a great deal about energy and environmental policy, and made rapid progress on my dissertation research. I continue to work with the ISEP network to this day.”
