Shiming Yang

Shiming Yang is a PhD candidate in political science and international relations at University of Southern California. She received her BA in Environmental Sciences from University of Virginia, and MA in Environmental Planning and Policy from University of Michigan. Prior to joining USC, she worked at UNEP (Nairobi) and Fung Global Institute.

Shiming is interested in the behavior of developing countries in environmental protection, particularly their growing divergence in international negotiations and domestic regulations. Her dissertation identifies the fragmentation of the Global South on global environmental issues. It examines the decision-making of major developing countries, such as India and China, in changing negotiation landscapes. Her other published work includes articles on China’s political economy, and environmental law and regulation in China and the United States.

As an ISEP fellow, Shiming is studying the environmental foreign policy-making of India and China, with a focus on their behavior at climate change and ozone-layer protection negotiations.
